One of the last places we visited was called "Pipe Village". Like much of India, it pulls at your heart and gives you hope at the same time. These Dalit families live among concrete drainage pipes. But they have continued to build on to them as they could - constructing walls, additional rooms, and even adding some basic electricity that - with the blessing of the pipe factory next door - they tapped from the factory. The families that live here are primarily those of the workers in the factory. Operation Mobilization works with these families as well and when we arrived, they came out in some of their nicest clothes, sang songs, and let us photograph the children as they played. Hope and optimism among harsh conditions.
